A Family-Owned American Footwear Tradition
SAS began when Terry Armstrong and Lew Hayden opened their first factory in an unused aircraft hangar in San Antonio in 1976. They started with just 13 shoemakers and built the business through word of mouth, with comfort and quality becoming central to the brand's reputation. SAS has continued as a family-owned company and still emphasizes handcrafted footwear and premium leather construction.
Fit Comes Before Everything Else
One of SAS's biggest differences is the attention given to the shape and fit of the shoe. The brand's Foot-Shape Last follows the natural shape of the foot, providing additional room toward the toes while keeping the heel secure. Many SAS styles are also offered in several widths, which makes the collection especially useful when a standard-width shoe feels too restrictive.
Support Built Around Three Pressure Points
SAS uses its Tripad comfort system to focus cushioning and support around three important areas of the foot: the inside ball, outside ball, and heel. This approach is different from simply adding a thick layer of soft foam throughout the shoe. Depending on the model, the collection also uses removable footbeds and flexible, shock-absorbing soles to create a more supportive feel for walking and standing.
Walking Shoes Designed for Long Days
Walking is one of SAS's strongest categories, with styles designed around roomy toe areas, supportive footbeds, and flexible construction. The SAS Tour II is one of the current Sole Provisions options for shoppers looking for an athletic walking style, while the Tour Mesh adds breathable leather and mesh construction for active everyday wear.
Leather Styles With a More Refined Look
SAS is not limited to athletic footwear. Styles such as SAS Swerve show how the brand brings its comfort-focused approach into a more polished silhouette. Swerve uses genuine leather, a soft microfiber lining, an adjustable closure, and a molded polyurethane insole shaped around the natural arches and curves of the foot.
Slip-Ons for Simpler Everyday Wear
If you prefer footwear that goes on without much effort, SAS also offers easy slip-on designs. The SAS Bliss uses a stretch fabric upper that flexes with the foot, a removable cushioned footbed, and a lightweight wedge sole. It is a useful option for shoppers who want the relaxed feel of a slip-on while still looking for structured support.
Footbeds That Do More Than Add Cushion
Many SAS styles use a removable CoolStep footbed designed to manage moisture while cushioning each step. SAS describes the footbed as washable and antibacterial, with a moisture-wicking lower layer and a surface designed to reduce friction and heat. Having a removable footbed can also be useful when you need to accommodate your own orthotic or simply prefer the option of replacing the insole.
Width Options Make a Real Difference
Length is only one part of finding a comfortable shoe. SAS offers many styles in several width options, and some models extend from slim or narrow widths through wide, extra-wide, or even triple-wide choices. The exact selection depends on the individual shoe, so checking the width options on each product page is important when fit is your main concern.
From Work Shoes to Weekend Footwear
The collection covers more than walking and athletic shoes. Sole Provisions currently carries SAS styles such as the Liberty Black, a handcrafted women's lace-up designed with water-resistant leather and a slip-resistant outsole for work environments. Other current styles include Swerve, Tour II, and Tour Mesh, giving shoppers options for different routines and wardrobes.
